Windraucheggalm and Mandlwände

From this vantage point opposite, you have the "Windraucheggalm,“ a popular destination for both tourists and locals. The alpine hut, known as the "Windraucheggalm,“ was constructed in 1875, around the same time as the Schweizerhütte in 1872 based on plans from the Allgäu region. The mining administration undertook study trips to the Allgäu region in Germany in the early 1870s to learn about mountain alpine farming.

The alpine farming, which involved livestock breeding and milk production, was crucial in addressing various deficiency diseases among miners, such as scurvy. The cause of this disease is a deficiency of Vitamin C, resulting from insufficient consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables or raw meat and fish. The treatment of this disease is relatively simple with an adequate intake of vitamin-rich food. The enrichment of miners‘ diets contributed significantly to increased production in mining.

Tools in the mine

In mining, there are many special tools and objects that helped the miners in their work. Here are three of them:

IlluminatedThe Illuminated was the lamp or light source used by miners in the dark underground. They used to have simple oil lamps or candles, later special lamps were added. Without the light, it would have been pitch black in the deep and dark tunnels and the miners would not have been able to see what they were doing.

Arse leatherThe Arse leather was a kind of thick, sturdy piece of leather that the miners wore at the back of their trousers to sit on. As they often had to work on the hard rock or sit on the ground, the arse leather protected them from sharp stones and the cold.

ToughThe Tough is the collective term for the tools that miners used in their work. These included things like hammers, chisels and shovels, which they used to break down the rock and extract the valuable minerals. Every mining tool was part of the "Gezähes" and was always ready to hand for work in the mine.

These tools and equipment were very important so that the miners could work safely and well.

Tools in the mine

In mining, there were many special tools and pieces of equipment that made the miners' work easier. Here are three important terms:

IlluminatedThe Illuminated was the lamp that miners used underground to see in the dark. In the past, they used simple oil lamps or candles, but later there were special miners' lamps. Without the light, it would have been completely dark in the deep and dark tunnels and work would have been impossible.

Arse leatherThe Arse leather was a thick piece of leather that the miners attached to the back of their trousers. As they often had to work or sit on the hard rock, the arse leather protected them from the cold, sharp stones and wear and tear. It served as padding for long, uncomfortable work shifts.

ToughThe Tough is the collective term for all the tools that miners used in their work. These included hammers, chisels, shovels and other tools they needed for digging and excavating the rock. The tools were indispensable for working in the mine and were always carried along.

This equipment was extremely important for the miners to be able to work in difficult conditions.

In mining, there were numerous specialised tools and equipment that helped miners to carry out their work efficiently and safely. Here are three important terms:

IlluminatedThe Illuminated refers to the lamp used by miners underground to see in the dark. In the past, simple oil lamps or candles were used, but later specialised miners' lamps were developed. Without the light, it would have been completely dark in the deep, dark tunnels, which would have made work considerably more difficult.

Arse leatherThe Arse leather is a thick piece of leather that the miners attached to the back of their trousers. As they often had to work or sit on the hard rock, the arse leather served as protection against the cold, sharp stones and wear and tear. It ensured that they were more comfortable during long working shifts.

ToughThe Tough is the general term for all tools used in mining. These include hammers, chisels, shovels and many other tools needed for digging and excavating rock. The tools were indispensable for the miners to carry out their work in the mine efficiently.

These tools and equipment played a crucial role in the safety and efficiency of the miners working underground.
